Choosing a search coil
To understand what determines how deep a target can be detected.
The following are general recommendations, not the only search coils which will work for a specific purpose.
SEARCH AREAS
Ploughed fields
10 - 13 inch DD or dual 12 inch and larger dual coils (any frequency).
Grass Meadow
Low grass: 13 inch DD or larger (any frequency).
High grass: 12 inch dual or larger (5.7 kHz).
Beach
13 inch DD (5.7 kHz).
Park
10 inch DD (18 kHz) or 9 or 11.5 inch Silver Scout (24 kHz).
Woodland
10 inch - 13 inch DD or dual 12 inch and larger dual coils (low frequency).
SEARCH CONDITIONS
Highly mineralized
13 inch DD or larger low frequency search coil such as dual 12 inch (5.7 kHz).
Highly conductive
Low frequency search coils only.
Trashy sites
9 inch and 11.5 inch Silver scout (24 kHz) as first choice. 10 inch DD (18 kHz).
SPECIFIC TARGETS
Artefacts and relics
Low frequency coils. 13 inch DD, Dual 12 inch or larger dual search coils.
Hoards
Dual 12 inch (5.7 kHz) or larger size.
Hammered Silver
9 or 11.5 inch Silver Scout (24 kHz) or 10 inch DD (18 kHz).
Gold coins and gold nuggets
9 inch or 11.5 inch Silver Scout search coil (24 kHz) or 10 inch DD (18 kHz)
SPECIAL PURPOSES
Unmasking
9 inch or 11.5 inch Silver Scout search coil (24 kHz) or 10 inch DD (18 kHz)
Very deep targets
Dual 12 inch (5.7 kHz) + larger search coils.
