THE NEXUS 3D METAL DETECTOR UNMASKING
TEST
The 3D cube set is a measurement tool designed to test
with great accuracy the unmasking performance of any
metal detector irrespective of ground conditions,
geographical location, hunting style, or preference.
With the 3D cube set, detectors can be compared with
unwavering confidence by exhibiting the exact
unmasking performance of each detector. Then, the
user can make an informed decision of which detector
will be most suitable for their particular Iron
contaminated sites.
The top side of each cube is considered the highest row
where Iron rods can be placed as demonstrated on the
pictures. Iron always should be at highest position
for the purpose of this unmasking test set.
The potential test scenarios will be near impossible to
calculate. For this reason some simple suggestions will
be made so that all metal detectors subjected to this
unmasking test can be compared in most efficient and
truthful way.
The test set contains
● Two cubes.
● 8 tests coin (disc) holders
● 20 Iron rods 20 cm length x 5 mm diameter,
● Bronze discs 0.8 mm thick with sizes 10 – 15 – 20 –
25 – 30 mm – 10 pieces of each.
● Iron discs 0.8 mm thick with sizes 10 – 15 – 20 – 25 –
30 mm – 10 pieces of each.
Test rules
● A lower number on any given test suggests a less
challenging level of difficulty.
● Higher numbers suggest more challenging level of
difficulty.
● Always start every tests sequence with a 30 mm
bronze disc as this will be the easiest target to
unmask. Then move to the smaller available sizes
until the test detector is no longer able to unmask.
Tests with one bronze disc and one Iron rod. Iron rod
placed in parallel position to cube walls.
Please note that the Iron rod always has to be placed at
middle position meaning both ends of the rod wo stick
out of the cube sides equally.
Tests with one 30 mm bronze disc.
.
Level 1
One Iron rod and one 30 mm bronze disc. Iron rod is to
be placed at the most top level next to the cube side
(the outer most hole position). The 30 mm bronze disc
should be placed at one of the end positions of a coin
holder and the holder it self in slot at closest distance
under the Iron level and at opposite side of the cube.
This would be the furthest distance apart between the
30 mm bronze disc and the Iron rod and also the
easiest way to unmask the test disc.
Level 2
Move the coin holder to the middle of the cube at the
same slot level.
Bronze disc at end position of coin holder.
Level 3
Move the coin holder in the slot under the Iron rod. Disc
at end position of the coin holder.
Level 4
Move the Iron rod one hole closer to the center of the
cube so that it would partially cover the test disc.
Repeat levels 1 to 4 with the 30 mm bronze disc placed
at the center of the coin holder. We will designate these
new 4 tests Level 5 – 8.
There are 9 slot levels available in total for the coin
holder positions. After the combinations are exhausted
with the highest slot level repeat all of the tests
with the 30 mm disc at the next lower slot level with is
15 mm below the top one.
At this level repeat the same steps as Level 1 – 8 and
we will call them level 9 – 16.
In this way if all levels are covered in the same
sequence the total number of tests with one 30 mm
bronze disc and one Iron rod will be 72.
Repeat the same sequence with the 25 mm, 20 mm,
15 mm and 10 mm bronze discs.
Tests with one bronze disc and one Iron rod. Two
Iron rods placed in parallel position to cube walls.
Please note that the Iron rod always has to be placed at
middle position meaning both ends of the rod wo stick
out of the cube sides equally.
Tests with one 30 mm bronze disc.
Start by placing the two Iron rods in the highest
available hole level in position
parallel to the cube walls. Place the coin holder at the
slot level closest to the Iron hole level.
In this case there will be 4 distinctly different coin test
positions – two with the coin holder in the middle slot
and two more with the holder at any one of the side
slots.
In the middle slot the test levels will be Level 1 – 2 with
1 being with the test disc at the center position.
With the coin holder moved at any of the side slots at
the same slot level the Level
3 – 4 test difficulty can be performed by placing the test
disc at side
position first and then at the center. The side position
test will be Level 3 and the center position test will be
Level 4.
Repeat the same test sequence on all 9 available slot
levels. This will allow 36 test levels in total.
The difficulty levels in this case will be numbered from
1 of 1 to 1 of 36.
Increasing the difficulty of the Two Iron rods placed in
parallel position to cube walls test set up.
Start the same test but this time move one of the Iron
rods one hole position closer to what’s the middle of the
cube.
Repeat all 36 test difficulty levels across all 9 coin
holder slot levels. The difficulty levels in this case will be
numbered from 2 of 1 to 2 of 36.
Further increase of test difficulty of the Two Iron rods
placed in parallel position to cube walls test set up.
Start the same test but this time move the Iron rod that
is still at end position one hole closer to what’s the
middle of the cube.
Repeat all 36 test difficulty levels across all 9 coin
holder slot levels. The difficulty levels in this case will be
numbered from 3 of 1 to 3 of 36.
Increasing the test difficulty of the Two Iron rods placed
in parallel position to cube walls test set up can be done
in this manner at 10 different steps allowing
360 distinctly different test positions to be performed
with each bronze test disc size.
The numbering system of this test section will extend
from 1 of 1 – 1 of 36 to 10 of 1 – 10 of 36.
The first digit indicating how many times an Iron rod has
been moved closer to the center position of the cube
from the initial start set up of this specific test.
Tests with one bronze disc and one Iron rod. Iron rod
placed from corner to corner.
Please note that the Iron rod always has to be placed at
middle position meaning both ends of the rod to stick
out of the cube corners equally.
This type of tests will offer 5 different test positions of
the bronze disc relative to the Iron rod.
This equals 45 levels of tests difficulty for each bronze
disc size.
Start by placing the Iron rod between two cube corners
at the highest available hole level.
Then place the coin holder at one slot side of the cube
in the slot level closest to the Iron rod position.
Test the detector with the 30 mm disc at all 3 coin
positions of the holder. This will be Leve 1 – 3. Level
one is at any coin end position. Level 3 will be at the
coin holder center.
Then move the coin holder to the middle slot at that
same level. Test the detector by moving the 30 mm disc
at the center of the holder and then at one of the end
coin positions. The end coin place will be Level 4 and
the center coin position will be Level 5, the most difficult.
Repeat all these tests from slot levels 1 to 9.
Repeat the same test sequence with the 25 mm, 20 mm,
15 mm and 10 mm bronze disc sizes.
Tests with one bronze disc and two Iron rods. Iron
rods placed from corner to corner forming a cross.
Please note that the Iron rods always has to be placed
at middle position meaning
both ends of the rod to stick out of the cube corners
equally.
This type of tests will offer 4 different test positions of
the bronze disc relative to the Iron rods.
This equals 36 levels of tests difficulty for each bronze
disc size.
Start by placing the Iron rod between two cube corners
at the highest available hole level.
Then place the coin holder at one slot side of the cube
in the slot level closest to the Iron rod position. There
will be only two distinctly different positions in which the
bronze disc can be used for testing.
Test the detector with one 30 mm disc at 2 coin
positions of the holder. One at the end of the holder and
in the middle of the holder. This will be Leve 1 – 2.
Level one is at any coin end position. Level 2 will be at
the coin holder center.
Then move the coin holder to the middle slot at the
same slot level.
Test the detector by placing the 30 mm bronze disc at
one end of the coin holder and after that by placing the
disc at the middle of the coin holder. These will be
Level 3 – 4, has been at the center position ( the most
difficult).
Repeat the same tests on all 9 slot levels.
Repeat the same test sequence with the 25 mm, 20 mm,
15 mm and 10 mm bronze disc sizes.
